How a session runs

Forty-five minutes. One axe in the bullseye.

  1. 1

    Briefing

Five minutes on how to hold it, how to carry it, and the two things the coach will say all session: "throw" and "clear".

  2. 2

    Stick your first one

The coach works on your grip, your step and your release until the axe is landing blade-first. For most people that's inside ten minutes.

  3. 3

    Play

21, Around the World, Killshot. The coach keeps score on the lane board and brings out the bigger axe once you've earned it.

  4. 4

    Final

Last ten minutes are a knockout. One winner per lane, photo with the axe in the bullseye on the way out.

The kit

Start small. Earn the big one.

Everyone starts on a 1.25 lb hatchet, the same weight used in competition: light enough to throw one-handed, heavy enough to bite. Once you're sticking consistently the coach brings out the big axe, a 2.5 lb two-hander that goes in with a very satisfying thud.

Targets are end-grain pine boards, soaked so the axe bites and swapped as they chew up. Lanes are steel mesh to the ceiling with a timber backstop and rubber matting, so a bounce goes nowhere.

  • Hatchets

1.25 lb, one-handed. Where everyone starts and where most of the scoring happens.

  • Big axe

2.5 lb, two-handed, coach's call. Fewer throws, bigger thud.

  • Games

21 for scoring, Around the World for accuracy, Killshot for the two small blue dots nobody hits.

  • Scoreboard

Every lane has one. Bullseyes, killshots and bragging rights.

Lane rules

Sharp things. Simple rules.

Axe throwing has a very good safety record for one reason: everyone follows the same six rules, every time.

Coach in the lane

Every lane has a coach for the whole session. Nobody throws, or collects, until they say so.

One on the line

One thrower at a time, standing on the line. Everyone else waits behind the lane's marked line.

Carry it head-down

Axes travel by the handle, head down, never swung or tossed. One axe out of the rack per thrower.

Your target only

Throw only at your own board. Never step forward to collect while anyone in the lane is still holding an axe.

Caged lanes, closed-toe shoes

Full-height steel mesh between lanes, timber backstop, rubber floor. Trainers or boots, no sandals.

Sober lanes

Same rule as everywhere at Breakworks: if we think you've been drinking you don't throw, and there's no refund.

Full rules on the terms & safety page.

FAQ

Axe questions.

I've never thrown an axe. Will I actually stick one?

Almost certainly. A coach stays in your lane, the first ten minutes are technique, and most people stick their first axe inside that time. Then it's about hitting the rings.

How old do I need to be?

18+, or 14 to 17 with a parent or guardian in the lane who signs for them. Younger kids are better on the archery range next door.

Is it safe?

Yes. Each lane is fully caged, one thrower on the line at a time, a coach controls when you throw and when you collect, and the axes are hatchets with a proper cutting edge but a controlled weight. Closed-toe shoes required.

How big are the axes?

You start with a 1.25 lb hatchet, which is what competitions use. Once you're sticking consistently the coach can bring out a bigger axe for two-handed throws.

Can we play games?

That's the point. 21, Around the World and Killshot are the standards. The coach keeps score and settles arguments.

Can we do all three activities?

Yes. The Lot gives you 20 minutes smashing, 30 on the archery range and 30 throwing axes for £75 a head, £13 less than booking separately. Smash & Throw pairs the axes with the rage room if you'd rather skip the bows.
