How a session runs

Thirty minutes. Sixty arrows. One winner.

  1. 1

    Briefing

Ten minutes on stance, nocking, drawing and release, plus the two commands you'll hear all session: "range hot" and "range clear".

  2. 2

    First arrows

An instructor stands with you for your first end, sorting your anchor point and aim until your arrows start landing together.

  3. 3

    Compete

60 arrows each across target faces and 3D foam animals. The lane scoreboard tracks groupings, golds and the inevitable rivalry.

  4. 4

    Collect & compare

Arrows come out of the target together on "range clear". Scores on the board, photo on the way out.

The kit

Proper recurve bows. Sized to you.

We shoot takedown recurve bows, the same style used in beginners' courses and the Olympics. Draw weights start at 16 lb, light enough for older children and anyone who's never shot, and go up to 30 lb for people who want a proper workout. The instructor picks your bow and arrow length on the line.

Everyone wears an arm guard and a finger tab, so nothing stings. Arrows are aluminium with field points, checked and straightened between sessions and retired the moment they show wear.

  • Target faces

Classic ten-ring faces for scoring. Where every session starts. Hit the gold.

  • 3D foam animals

Foam boars, deer and the odd zombie. Harder to hit, more fun to.

  • Balloon targets

Add-on. Pin them to the boss and pop them. Very satisfying, very loud.

  • Scoreboard

Every lane has one. Groupings, golds and bragging rights.

Range rules

Precision sport. Run like one.

The range is calmer than the rage room, and more tightly controlled. Six rules, no exceptions.

Instructor on the line

Nobody shoots without a range officer present. They control when the range is hot and when it's clear.

Behind the line, always

Everyone stays behind the shooting line until the range officer calls it clear. Arrows are collected together.

Draw at the target only

A bow is only drawn on the shooting line, pointing downrange, with an arrow nocked. Never dry-fired, never pointed at a person.

Kit on

Arm guard and finger tab for everyone shooting. Loose sleeves, scarves and dangling jewellery come off first.

Our kit only

Our bows, our arrows, our targets. Everything is checked daily and matched to the lane.

Sober range

Same rule as the rage room: if we think you've been drinking you won't shoot, and there's no refund.

Full rules on the terms & safety page.

FAQ

Range questions.

I've never shot a bow. Is that a problem?

No. Most people who come have never held one. The briefing covers stance, draw and release, an instructor stays with you for your first arrows, and we start everyone on a light bow and move you up when you're ready.

How old do I need to be?

Archery suits all ages. 16+ can come on their own; 8 to 15 year olds are welcome with a parent or guardian on the range, and we have lighter bows and shorter arrows for them.

Do I need to be strong?

No. Our recurve bows start at a 16 lb draw, which most adults and older children manage comfortably. Heavier bows are there if you want them.

Will it hurt my arm?

Not if the kit's on. Everyone gets an arm guard and a finger tab, and the instructor checks your stance so the string clears your forearm.

Can we do both the rage room and the range?

Yes. Smash & Shoot gives you 20 minutes smashing and 30 on the range for £55 a head, £5 less than booking them separately. Shoot & Throw pairs the range with the axe lanes, and The Lot does all three.

Can I bring my own bow or arrows?

Not on public sessions. Only our equipment is used, so we know exactly what's being shot and that it's within the lane's rating. Club nights with your own kit may come later.
